We are husband and wife Gary and Barbara Coombs. We met many years ago while living in Germany, got married, moved back to the UK, had kids and got old. We love the great outdoors and go hiking in mountainous regions most years for our main vacation but deciding to climb Kilimanjaro is just about the biggest thing we have ever embarked upon. For us climbing Kilimanjaro is not about going on a charity organised event or with large tour company but a about arranging a private adventure in a Fair Trade way so that as much as possible remains with the Tanzanians and not in the coffers of western organisations.
We live a massive 90m above sea level in a temperate climate, so the prospect of hiking over 60km, climbing to nearly 6,000m, traversing 5 climatic zones from the rain forest to the arctic and doing that in just 6 days is both amazingly exhilarating and, to be honest, a bit scary but we are well down the route of planning the trip of a lifetime to equatorial Africa, so there is no turning back now. Let's just hope we're still smiling when we get back!
