Good and thank you for visiting  Kilimanjaro 2009

This site documents the planning and execution of our personal expedition to climb the highest free-standing mountain in the world and the highest point in Africa in August 2009.  The original idea, towards the end of 2008, was simply to fulfil a lifelong dream but as our planning progressed and not least because just about everyone asked for whom we would be raising funds the idea of raising money for charity came into greater focus.

On 12 March 2009, along with a large proportion of the UK population, we sat rooted to the spot watching the amazing achievements of 9 UK celebrities, their camera crew and excellent team of Tanzanian guides and porters as they climbed the mountain for Comic Relief raising over £3 million for good causes in both the UK and in Africa.

The video clip below relates to those celebrities but sums up a lot of what we are thinking about the challenge that lies ahead.

This really crystallised our thinking and watching the Red Nose Day extravaganza on 13 March, with its emphasis on that great achievement and the relentless fight against malaria, in the very area we would be visiting, made up our minds and we contacted the Comic Relief team.

While Red Nose Day 2009 might be long gone by the time we set foot on Tanzanian soil Comic Relief continues and the need for the money that charity raises both for the UK and for Africa will be every bit as great in the summer as it was in March.

Doing Summit Mad for MoneyThe Red Nose Day website is open for business to allow online donations, so please show your support for us and the great work done by Comic Relief and use the image above left to go to our donation page on the Red Nose Day web site as we do "Summit Mad for Money"

But you'll find more than just Kilimanjaro and requests for donations on these pages because the adventure takes us first through the thought processes, planning and training training before we drive to the Alps to acclimatise staying in a high Alpine refuges at around 3,000m and climbing 3 or 4 3,000+ metre peaks in as many days before jetting off to Tanzania and the big climb.

Upon our return to civilisation we embark on a 3-day safari before returning to the Alps to meet our children for some more leisurely mountain walks and to wind down.

Some menu items are not yet populated but more pages and links will appear as our planning progresses and certainly once we return.

Thank you for your interest in our adventure.
