As mentioned elsewhere, once the young adults in the family had decided that climbing this hill was not for them, and although the idea of linking a safari with the climb had been on the agenda since early in our planning, it did not seem appropriate for us to undertake a whole week's safari without them. Even so, to go all that way and not see the wonderful wildlife felt odd so we decided to hang a short "taster" safari to the end of the climb so that we would be better informed as and when we decide to go back with them to do a "complete" safari. On its own this would not have added much complexity but as our planning progressed the overall complexity of this adventure grew. First we found it far cheaper to fly from Munich than to fly from the UK. This led us to come up with the idea of a short stay high up in the Austrian Alps to acclimatise. This necessitated arranging travel and accommodation to get us down to the Alps, arranging accommodation in the mountain hut, which in turn necessitated joining the Austrian Alpine Club as non-members cannot pre-book and arranging airport parking at Munich airport. Then there is the fact that our young adults want some sort of holiday with the bank of mum and dad despite not coming to Africa. This led to us adding a week back in the Alps upon our return from Africa. The kids will rendezvous with us in Munich. This meant we had to organise our travel to and from Africa to coincide with their flights to Germany so that we can meet at the airport without one or other of us waiting for hours. This actually ended up dictating the whole African timetable and led to us adding overnight accommodation in Munich because our apartment in Alps is not available until a day after we return from Africa. If all goes to plan everything will run like clockwork; if not, there is always the credit card and mobile phone to keep in contact!
The final itinerary looks
